The reformation started with a people that disagreed with the Church and it's practices. those who were caught faced the Diet of Worms where they were sentenced to either excommunication or burned at the stake. Martin Luther was one of these people. When he was a child, he was caught in a storm, He prayed to St. Anne for his protection and in return, he would devote his life to the Church. One day, when he was visiting Rome, he saw that the Church was using purgatory and the sale of indulgences as an excuse to get money, poor peasants would use up a lot of their money so that a family member would be in heaven. |
When he went back to Wittenburg, Germany, He started to lose faith in the Church. A man named Johann Tetzel arrived in Wittenburg, he sold indulgences like crazy. He was notorious for convincing the poor to buy them, this caused Luther to despise the man. Luther eventually wrote 95 theses (complaints) against the church. He was called to a trial for the Hierarchy where he said "I can not recant these books", meaning that He couldn't destroy them. One of Luther's helpers was a man by the name of Prince Friedrich. Prince Friedrich helped Luther in the reformation of the church because he too disagrees with it's practices. |
