I've been in battles where we charge towards the enemy on an open field, but this is different. This was more frightening. Prince Peter was under attack, all the knights were called in to protect, every person who worked on the field was in the castle. The enemy came rising over the horizon, like beasts of a faraway land. Big tall towers were heading our way, the archers fired at it, but it was no use, the siege towers front protected the soldiers behind, soon, the tower reached the walls, soldiers where pouring out. Trebuchets where bombarding us with large rocks, soldiers climbed up ladders. We poured a mixture of flammable liquids called Greek Fire upon the attackers. archers shooting frantically through there protected arrow slits. It was chaos, for a moment, I thought that I would die right then and there. I slashed my sword at the enemy with all my might, but they were just appearing from nowhere. There was a rumble, I looked to see that a battering ram had knocked down the east gate, atop the gate, soldiers were pouring the flammable liquid through the murder holes. This could be it, every minute, the soldiers advance deeper into the castle. The siege lasted for months, finally it subsided, the enemy ran away in defeat. I later learned that the people who saved us were scouts, they had in fact spotted the army 7 days before the invasion. That was not something to remember, all the horror, but once one sees it, they cannot forget. |
